Some say that red wine is the true winelovers choice and it does take an experienced palette to appreciate the finer qualities of red wines. If you are new to wine drinking then a white is likely to suit your inexperienced palette rather better.

Red wines tend to have a more full bodied and richer flavour which can be rather overpowering for an inexperienced palette but the more you drink them the more your tastebuds learn to appreciate all the different flavors available in your mouth.
The different regions and different grapes produce a vaste range of taste sensations from light and refreshing to deep, heavy. It is also said that a glass of red wine each day is a very good antioxident and is good for the heart so in moderation, a red wine can be good for you, it would seem.
