How To Aerate A Bottle Of Wine

Usually wines taste good, however to really get the best flavor from them, you need to decant them. Sadly most people avoid doing this step, or maybe they're not even aware that they should decant their wine. But truth is, without decanting, the wine just doesn't taste as good as it should.

Decanting your wine implies leaving all those sediments at the bottom of your wine bottle. You simply pour the wine into a container, which is also called a wine decanter, and in the process the sediments are left out. This way when you are drinking the wine from your glass, you won't feel those small particles of deposits in your mouth.

Decanting also involves aerating the wine. This means that the wine gets in contact with oxygen (with air) so that the taste and flavor of the drink is greatly enhanced. This truly brings out the entire aroma and flavor of your wine.

Not every wine needs to be decanted, however. Those that need to go through this process are the full bodied red wines because they usually contain more deposits than other types of wine. Also when it comes to age, you need to decant wines between 6-15 years old prior to drinking. As soon as you have decanted the wine, it should be consumed immediately, to avoid losing the great flavor that the aerating process brought forward. The older the wine is, the faster it loses its great aromatic bouquet and after 1 or 2 days it's no longer good for drinking. Try to consume the wine one or two hours max after decanting it.

Finally, keep in mind that really old wines (between 20-30 years old) should not be decanted because they are truly mature wines and the process of aeration could destroy their very fragile flavor. All you need to do with these wines is pour them slowly directly from the bottle to avoid transferring your sediments into the drinking glasses.
